Midlife Skincare

I have struggled with skin issues all my life.

As a child one irritation or rash after another, then in my teens up until the present with mostly hormonal acne.

It’s true that your skin often signals what is going on inside the body. There also allergic reactions to certain perfumes or dyes found in everyday items like laundry detergent and body soap.

Along with changes in diet and using more fragrance free products, proper skin cleansing and protection is necessary to keep us looking good.

Lately serums like Vitamin C that boost collagen production or Hyaluronic Acid (HA) to improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles are being promoted by Dermatologists and beauty influencers.

Sunscreen is a daily must for protection from environmental damage. I personally have been using formulas that are at least an SPF of 50.

Dr. Alexis Stephens offers 4 tips for applying hyaluronic acid:

#1 It’s important that you use serums on damp skin after cleansing in order to get the benefits.

She says to think of our skin like a sponge that absorbs much better when it is moist.

#2 After the serum (wait 30 seconds) apply a moisturizer or oil.

#3 Pair HA properly with other products as it is a penetration enhancer.

So, if you use something that has the potential to irritate your skin, you may want to apply that separately and at another time. However, because it helps penetrate, using hyaluronic acid with a dark spot corrector could cause it to work even better.

#4 Sleep near a humidifier so that the HA stays in your skin and is not pulled out into the environment, especially if the heater is on.
